Francis Gough

I started my own practice in 2003 after 23 years of working on commercial, institutional, multifamily, and custom home projects. My first exposure to architecture came while growing up during the 1960’s and ‘70’s in the Hamptons on Long Island. It was the high point of the modern home era, and the difference in expression between those modern beach homes and the traditional New England architecture could not have been more clear.  I had the good fortune of working with Norman Jaffe, AIA during the late 1970’s while I was still in architecture school.  He designed a number of Architectural Record Homes and was known for his own style of earthy, romantic modern design. He impressed upon me a strong sense of materials and colors to complement my formal design and technical training. The experience of living there and working on those homes still provides me with the inspiration for many of my design ideas.

While attending the Cornell University School of Architecture, I completed studios in Washington, DC,  and Paris, France, deepening my understanding of both modern and classical architecture.  After graduating college and touring Europe, I moved to San Francisco in 1980 and started my career, working in a number of established offices before founding my own practice in 2003.

My experience spans a wide variety of building types, located throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Commercial buildings, mixed-use, high-rises, corporate campuses and re-purposed structures were the dominant projects of the first half of my career, while single and multifamily homes have been my primary focus since 2000.

Regardless of building type, my goal has always been to produce architecture that is respectful of its context, expressive of its intent, inspired by its site, authentic, beautiful, and functional.
